MBA programme structure in the UK

1. Duration

Most UK MBA programmes are of 1 year’s duration – making it a very attractive option for MBA aspirants looking to dive back into the business world at the earliest.

Certain universities may have programmes of longer duration, such as 15-18 months.

2. Intake

MBA programmes typically offer intakes in the latter half of the year, between August-September. 

Certain universities may offer intakes in January, though these are far less common.

3. Cost of Study

In the UK, as elsewhere across the world, MBA programmes are among the most expensive postgraduate degree programmes – owing to the kind of resources you are given access to and exposure you stand to benefit from. 

The average tuition fee is 16000 GBP, which amounts to approximately 16,00,000 INR (at current rates). Some of the most prestigious programmes can cost upto 50-60000 GBP; but there are also several excellent universities offering lower-priced MBA programmes as well.

Additionally, as per the Student Visa indication – living in London, one of the UK’s most expensive locations, would cost about 11000-12500 GBP for one academic year (i.e. 9 months). This amounts to approximately 10-12,00,000 INR (at current rates).

Eligibility criteria for a UK MBA

1. Prior Study

The basic eligibility criterion for MBA programmes in the UK is 15 years of study i.e. 12 years of schooling and 3 years higher education at the minimum – which means that your 3-year Bachelors from an Indian university will be accepted.

There is no specific area of study or type of degree required. So, whether you have completed an Engineering degree, a BCom, or a Bachelor’s in Business Administration, you can apply to a UK university for your MBA.

2. Work Experience 

To study MBA in UK, work experience of at least 3-4 years is ideal. This is so because the MBA is designed to draw on your industry experiences, as well as those of your classmates – in order to build a strong foundation going beyond theory. All the best UK B-Schools, from the London School of Business to Warwick Business School, require work experience.

However, freshers’ with no experience, or 1-2 years’ experience at most, also have options in UK MBA programmes – universities such as Anglia Ruskin University and the University of Northampton, for instance, target students with limited work experience, offering opportunities to build the foundations of their business career.

3. Statement of Purpose/Personal Statement

The perfect SOP can be just the thing you need to guarantee your MBA admission!

For students looking to study in UK, the SOP is meant to be an indicator of the candidate’s academic strengths and potential. Your SOP must reflect your academic and other relevant achievements, that you have clear and relevant reasons behind your desire to pursue the programme in question, as well as your preparedness to take on the rigours of the programme.   

As an MBA aspirant, your work experience and everything you have built so far must come across clearly in your SOP – thus letting the university know that you would be an asset to their programme. Your aspirations in the field of business are significant as well – they will indicate your determination and sense of purpose.

4. Language Requirement

As with several other highly-sought after postgraduate programmes, UK MBA programmes typically demand proof of English language proficiency – IELTS is the preferred test, with scores upwards of 5.5. PTE is also accepted by several universities.

5. GRE/GMAT

Several UK universities require and accept either one or the other, or both, of these graduate exams. There are also some UK universities that may not demand the same.

In general, the required GMAT score is upwards of 600.
