Medical Education in India vs Abroad

...

How to help your child choose right!

Your child has decided that he or she wants to be a doctor – and as a parent, you are feeling happy and proud!

But now, your task is deciding how to give them the best possible start to their career. This article will show you all your options, to help you make the right decision for your child.

What are the options after NEET?

India has a big shortage of medical seats in government colleges. This means that too many smart and hard-working students may not be able to find a place for MBBS in India, even if they do well in NEET.

If this happens to your child, what are your alternative options?

  • Some students choose to take a gap year to study for the exam next year – but this will mean losing a valuable year in their career, without any guarantee that next year’s result will be better.

  • Some students choose to study in private medical universities in India. But while these universities are good for academic purposes, there is one huge disadvantage – the cost! Unlike government colleges, private colleges in India are very expensive, and some may even demand donations to get the seat.

  • Finally, several students decide to go abroad for their MBBS studies. The Medical Council of India permits students to study abroad in recognised institutions, after they qualify through NEET. Once they finish their studies, they are permitted to come back and work in India. Countries in Eastern Europe have become the most popular option for Indian medical students.

In the end, to make sure your child can start his or her career sooner instead of later, it comes down to just one big question:

Which is better – MBBS in India or MBBS abroad?”

MBBS in Indian Private Universities vs MBBS in Eastern Europe

Take a look at this comparison between the two options.

Cost of MBBS in India vs MBBS in Eastern Europe

The MBBS fees in private medical colleges can cost anywhere between 60 lakhs to 1.5 crores for the duration of studies. You will also have to spend on your child’s accommodation and other expenses, if the college is far from your home.

The MBBS abroad, in countries like Georgia, Russia or Ukraine costs about 3000 to 8000 USD per year. This means that you will only be spending between Rs 14 to 40 lakhs for your child’s entire education! Besides that, the living expenses (everything from food to accommodation), will come to about 5-10 lakhs for 6 years in total. So even if you include everything, studying MBBS abroad is the more affordable option.

Quality of Education of MBBS in India vs MBBS Abroad

Even if the cost is lower for MBBS Abroad, you want to make sure that your child is really getting a good education.

You will be happy to know that Eastern European medical universities offer high quality education, and are equally good as the top-ranked government and private universities in India. They are accredited by the WHO, and meet global standards of education.

The MCI has given official recognition to medical universities in Russia, Georgia, Ukraine and other countries. After finishing MBBS, Indian graduates from these universities are eligible to answer the FMGE exam to practice in India.

Student experience of MBBS in India vs MBBS Abroad

Many parents worry about the safety of their children if they go abroad. However, the safety standards in Eastern European cities are very high. The students themselves report feeling very safe, even at night.

You also do not need to worry about your child’s quality of life – from hostels to food, there are plenty of great facilities. The people in Eastern European cities are very welcoming, and the universities make great efforts to ensure that Indian students are well-taken care of. Several universities even give students holidays to celebrate their local festivals.

And you do not even need to worry about your child feeling home-sick! While they will need some time to adjust away from the comforts of home, they will become a part of a big community of Indian students abroad.

Besides, for young students, going to college away from home is a great experience. Your youngster will return as a confident, independent adult you will be proud of!

Final Verdict?

Sending your child abroad for MBBS could be the best option for his or her career!

From quality of education to quality of life, your child will get it all – at a very affordable cost.
