Why Indian students are going abroad for MBBS in 2020 !!
Has all the information swirling around the internet about MBBS abroad got you confused? Are you concerned whether an MBBS from Russia or Georgia is really advantageous? Or will it create problems for you if you want to practise in India?
We’re here to help clear things up so that you have all the information you need about this big decision!
The Scenario in the Recent Past
Medical graduates from universities in Russia, Georgia, China, Ukraine, and other such countries have to answer the Foreign Medical Graduates Exam or FMGE, before they can qualify to practise in India.
Unfortunately, the pass percentage has been very low, with an average of only 15% of foreign graduates clearing the exam every year.
Because of this, on one hand, there are a lot of doubts among good students about whether going abroad for their studies is a good idea – even though it is the most affordable option.
And on the other hand, the foreign graduates themselves complain of the lack of transparency of the FMGE and the difficulties they face in trying to get certified in India.
However, there are two big changes coming up, that are transforming the situation!
The New Scenario, Today
In the last year, several new changes have been proposed at the government-level, that are transforming the medical education situation in India. This will benefit not only the people of the country, but all the young medical aspirants too!
NEET Compulsory for MBBS Abroad
In 2019, an order was passed that Indian students can apply for medical studies abroad only after they pass the NEET entrance exam with at least the minimum passing marks.
Embassies abroad have been informed of this, and now all MCI-approved universities abroad are taking NEET into consideration before admitting Indian students.
Prior to this, students who did not answer NEET or did not pass NEET would opt to take admission abroad – which means that the overall quality of students going abroad was automatically low. But now, only good students who clear NEET are able to go abroad, automatically increasing the quality!
This new regulation also increases the options for Indian students who pass NEET. Instead of having only expensive private universities in India as their option, if they don’t get a government college seat – they can now take up the extremely affordable option of studying in Russia or Georgia, alongside other good students.
With this, any stigma attached to MBBS from abroad disappears – and our graduates from abroad are to get all the opportunities they deserve!
NEXT to replace FMGE
The FMGE has come under a lot of criticism lately, for being highly disadvantageous to foreign graduates. They are known to be bogged down by paperwork, and there is little transparency about how the exam really works.
However, a new bill has been introduced in Parliament which proposes a new exam called NEXT or National Exit Test – which is meant to replace NEET-PG for medical graduates from Indian universities, and yes, the FMGE as well!
Is this good news for Indian graduates from foreign universities, especially Eastern European countries? Yes!
The new test will be standardised for everyone. Which means that all medical graduates in India will start on an equal footing, and will get the same chances to qualify to practice or study further in India. Greater transparency will be ensured, so that foreign graduates will be not be more disadvantaged.
As per current news updates, the NEXT should come into force from 2022.
So, what does that mean for medical aspirants in 2020?
Now, more and more good students who pass NEET are getting to secure all the seats in medical universities abroad.
And all these students will definitely be answering the NEXT examination, after their graduation in 6 years – which means that they will get all the same advantages as their Indian colleagues.
Therefore, it is now more advantageous than ever before, for bright young medical aspirants to go abroad for their MBBS – where they can avail of good-quality, affordable education… and a much stronger assurance of a job in India once they graduate.
