PTE Reading Test: Tips and Techniques – Part 3

...

1. Multiple-choice, choose multiple answers

What is the task?

You will have to read the passage on the screen/page. Below the passage, you will be given a question regarding the passage and a list of possible answers. You have to select all the options which are correctly related to the passage you have read. There will be 2-3 such tasks. The purpose of the task is to test your ability to identify correct information based on what you comprehend through reading.

Tips and Techniques

a. First read the passage and pay close attention to what is being said. Do you understand what the passage is about?

  • An important element of this task is vocabulary – the more you develop your vocabulary, the better you will be able to understand information presented in written text. Refer to the general tips and techniques to help you work on your vocabulary.

b. After you have finished your first reading, move to read the question and understand what is being asked:

  • Is it the purpose of the passage i.e. what the speaker is doing?
    • (e.g. “explaining”, “describing:, “criticizing”; before you take the mock test, find out the meanings of such words/phrases – when you know what these mean, you will know if the passage is doing them.)
  • Or is it the content of the passage i.e. what the speaker is talking about?

c. Read each option carefully. Then, keeping the question in mind, return to the passage and read it again. Try to figure out what the answer to the question is.

d. Return to the options, and identify which of the options corresponds with your answer.

e. The correct answer to the question will be the option which says the truest thing about the passage OR the option which has actually been mentioned in the passage (depending on the type of question).

  • The wordings of the options will not be exactly the same as what appears in the recorded passage. Ensure that the ideas in the option are linked together in the same way as they are in the passage.

f. Don’t forget that there is more than one correct option.

2. Fill in the Blanks (Reading and Writing)

What is the task?

There will be a passage on the screen/page. Some of the words are replaced by blank spaces, which are numbered. Below the passage, for each numbered blank a list of words will be displayed as options. You have to fill in each blank with the correct word, from the corresponding options. There will be 5-6 such tasks. The purpose of the task is to test your ability to comprehend through reading, and connect information based on meaning/grammar.

Tips and Techniques

a. Start reading the passage. When you come across a blank, try and figure out which of the corresponding options would fit best – the correct option will connect with or complete the sentence in such a way that the full sentence conveys information that makes sense and is grammatically correct.

b. The options will be connected based on either meaning, or a rule of grammar.

  • Meaning: you will be given words with different meanings – you must select the word whose meaning fits into the sentence and makes sense.
  • Grammar: for instance, the options may be different tense forms of a particular verb or different prepositions or conjunctions – you must select the option that completes the sentence in a grammatically correct way.

c. The essential elements of this task are grammar and vocabulary – refer to the general tips and techniques to help you work on the same.
