Reading Test: Tips and Techniques – Part 1

1. Multiple-choice, choose single answer

What is the task?

You will have to read the passage on the screen/page. Below the passage, you will be given a question regarding the passage and a list of possible answers. You have to select the answer which is correctly related to the passage you have read – there will be only one correct answer. There will be 2-3 such tasks. The purpose of the task is to test your ability to identify correct information based on what you comprehend through reading.

Tips and Techniques

  1. Before you take a look at the questions, first read the passage and pay close attention to what is being said. Do you understand what the passage is about?
  • An important element of this task is vocabulary – the more you develop your vocabulary, the better you will be able to understand information presented in written text. Refer to the general tips and techniques to help you work on your vocabulary.
  1. After you have finished your first reading, move to read the question and understand what is being asked:
  • Is it the purpose of the passage i.e. what the speaker is doing?
    • (e.g. “explaining”, “describing:, “criticizing”; before you take the mock test, find out the meanings of such words/phrases – when you know what these mean, you will know if the passage is doing them.)
  • Or is it the content of the passage i.e. what the speaker is talking about?
  1. Read each option carefully. Then, keeping the question in mind, return to the passage and read it again. Try to figure out what the answer to the question is.
  2. Return to the options, and identify which of the options corresponds with your answer.
  3. The correct options will be those which say the truest thing about the passage OR something which has actually been mentioned in the passage (depending on the type of question).
  • The wordings of the options will not be exactly the same as what appears in the recorded passage. Ensure that the ideas in the option are linked together in the same way as they are in the passage.
  1. Remember that only one option is correct.

2. Fill in the Blanks (Reading)

What is the task?

There will be a passage on the screen/page. Some of the words are replaced by a blank space. Below the passage, the list of missing words will be displayed as options. You have to fill in each blank with the correct word, from these options. There will be 2-3 such tasks. The purpose of the task is to test your ability to comprehend through reading, and connect information based on meaning.

Tips and Techniques

  1. Take a look at the options before you begin reading the passage. Keep them in mind.
  2. Once you start reading, when you come across a blank, try and figure out which of the options would fit best – the option must connect with or co\mplete the sentence in such a way that the full sentence conveys information that makes sense.
  3. After you have finished reading the passage, finalise which option fits best in which blank.
  4. An essential element of this task is vocabulary – the more you develop your vocabulary, the better you will be able to understand information you read, and make connections. Refer to the general tips and techniques to help you work on your vocabulary.
