  1. Highlight Correct Summary

What is the task?

You will have to listen to a recording of a passage. On the screen/page, there will be different summaries of the recorded passage, given as options. You have to select the correct option that best summarises the passage. There is only one correct option. There will be 2-3 such tasks. The purpose of the task is to test your ability to understand and identify similar information despite differences in the wording, based on comprehension through listening.

Tips and Techniques

  1. Take notes: While listening to the recording, make a note of the main points. You can also try to identify the main topic. Make sure that you pay close attention to what is said so that it remains fresh in your memory – your notes will help to refresh your memory.
  2. Read each option carefully. The wordings of the options will not be exactly the same as what is mentioned in the recorded passage.
  3. Use your notes to see which of the options corresponds best to the passage:
  4. Look for words with similar meanings as the words used in the passage.
  5. Ensure that the ideas are linked together in the same way as they are in the passage.

 

  1. Select Missing Word

What is the task?

You will hear a recording of a short passage. At the end of the passage, the last group of words will be replaced by a ‘beep’ sound. On the screen/page, you will be given options – you have to choose the group of words that will correctly complete the passage in the recording. There is only one correct option. There are 2-3 such tasks. The purpose of the task is to test your ability to complete incomplete information based on your comprehension of the given information, through listening.

Tips and Techniques

  1. Pay close attention to the entire recording, to understand what is being said.
  2. Based on the information you have already been given choose the option that would logically complete that information.
  • The correct option will not contradict any of the information given in the earlier parts of the passage.
