  1. Australian National University

Located in Australia’s national capital of Canberra, ANU is ranked number 1 nationally, and 29th globally. It is ranked 33rd for Arts and Humanities, and has secured top ranks for several of its individual taught subjects as well, including Anthropology, Politics and International Studies, Development Studies, Earth and Marine Sciences, Geography, History, and Law and Legal Studies. With a relatively low student population of 18000, including 8000 internationals, it is ranked highly in terms of its low teacher-student ratio. 

  1. University of Melbourne

UniMelb, established in 1853, is one of the oldest universities in the country. It is ranked 2nd in Australia and 38th worldwide. It is considered the best in Australia for several of its taught subjects, including Computer Sciences, Biological Sciences, Economics and Econometrics, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and English Language and Literature. It has an international student population of 18000. It is benefited in terms of its location in Melbourne, which is consistently voted as the world’s most liveable city, and scores highly in terms of employer activity. 

  1. University of Sydney

The University of Sydney founded 1850, is Australia’s first university. It is currently ranked 43rd worldwide, and thus 3rd in Australia – its top-ranked subjects include Philosophy, Geography, Communication and Media Studies, Law and Legal Studies, Natural Sciences, and Politics. It boasts of one of the largest international student populations of any Australian university, with 25000 out of 46000 students falling into this category. Its campus has also been voted as one of the world’s most beautiful!

  1. University of New South Wales

UNSW is also located in Sydney. It currently enjoys a world rank of 43 and a national rank of 4. It has a strong disciplinary reputation in terms of the STEM subjects, and is ranked first in Australia for the subjects of Civil and Structural Engineering, Materials Science and Mechanical and Aeronautical Manufacturing, among others. It caters to an international student population of about 17000. Furthermore, Sydney has itself been ranked as one of the world’s top 10 cities for international students, with UNSW thus benefitting from its infrastructure, safety, employer activity and diversity.

  1. University of Queensland

UQ, ranked 48th and thus rounding out Australia’s presence in the world’s Top 50 Universities, boasts of several top-ranked subjects, including Nursing, Sociology, Earth and Marine Science, Anthropology, Agriculture and Forestry, and Statistics and Operational Research. It is located in the city of Brisbane, and has an international student population of 15400. UQ has close ties with India – it has instituted scholarships exclusively for the benefit of Indian students, such as the HASS Scholarships for Excellence and the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences Indian Scholarship. 

  1. Monash University

Another top university located in Melbourne, Monash University is consistently ranked among the top 1% universities of the world – currently standing in 58th place. It is the 2nd oldest university in Australia. It is top-ranked, for its faculties of Pharmacology, Education and Training, Nursing, Social Sciences and Management, and Performing Arts. With a population of over 30000 international students, it can boast of the largest and most diverse global representation in the country.

  1. University of Western Australia

UWA, currently ranked 86th in the world, is not only a Go8 university, but also one of only 2 Australian universities in the Worldwide University Network. It has the 7th best faculty in the world for Mining and Mineral Engineering, with its Anatomy and Physiology, Performing Arts, Earth and Marine Sciences, Agriculture and Forestry, and Sports-related subjects, ranked in the Top 50. It has 2 campuses located in 2 major cities i.e. Perth and Albany, and like ANU, has a relatively small student population of 18000 including 5000 internationals. 

  1. University of Adelaide

The University of Adelaide, located in Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, was founded in 1874, and is currently ranked 106th worldwide – it is thus yet another one of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious universities. It boasts of high ranks for several of its subjects, 4 of which have made it to the top 50 – namely, mineral and mining engineering, dentistry, nursing and veterinary sciences. 8000 of its 21000 students are international.
