In the IELTS Reading test, your score depends upon your ability to comprehend a passage and locate information quickly, within the given time limit. Speed reading is an important skill you need to develop for this.
We give you our strategies for how to read fast in IELTS Reading.
Strategies for Speed Reading in IELTS
-
Skimming and Scanning
These are the most common reading strategies utilised by students. Skimming involves moving your eyes rapidly across the page to get a basic understanding of what the passage is about. Scanning involves reading rapidly to locate particular facts.
In IELTS, you will skim through the passage before looking at the questions. After you read the questions, you will scan the passage for the answers.
-
Reading for Key Words
The key words are the words in the passage that convey important information. Usually, the key words are nouns and verbs. Adjectives, prepositions, and conjunctions are less important. So in this technique, you will read quickly, focusing only on the keywords.
In IELTS, this technique makes it easier to locate the answers later.
-
Summarization Technique
In this technique, you will read the topic sentence giving the main information (1st paragraph), the main and supporting arguments (1st lines of each body paragraph), and the conclusion (last paragraph).
In IELTS, this technique helps you understand the whole paragraph quickly, and connect the questions accordingly.
By developing a good strategy combining all of these, you’ll be able to read complex passages in no time. But remember – it takes practice!
