IELTS Speaking: Use the Right Body Language

...

Does Body Language matter in IELTS Speaking? Will it affect your score?

Read on to find out!

IELTS Speaking and Body Language

In IELTS Speaking, you are only graded on your language skills: Fluency and Coherence, Grammar, Vocabulary, and Pronunciation.

You will not be scored on Body Language!

But that doesn’t mean that it is unimportant! Using Body Language correctly helps leave a good impression, and boosts your own confidence!

Good Body Language tips for IELTS Speaking

  1. How to Sit: Maintain an erect posture, instead of slouching. Not only will this make you appear confident, but you will feel confident too! You can rest your legs however you want, whether crossing your ankles or knees, or keeping them straight. But do not lift your legs up onto the chair, as this may appear unprofessional.

  2. Using hand gestures: There is nothing wrong with using hand gestures while speaking. However, you must not use hand gestures instead of speaking! The same goes for nodding and shaking your head. Always focus on using language to reply, and don’t pay much attention to your body.

  3. Facial expression: Try to avoid frowning, or appearing stressed and nervous. Smile, nod politely and relax your facial muscles. The more relaxed your face is, the more relaxed your mind will feel.

Try it out! Stand in front of the mirror and smile to yourself. You will soon feel good!

Above all, be yourself. Don’t try to adopt body language that does not come naturally. Being relaxed is the key to speaking confidently!
