Studying Abroad in Australia: FAQs

  1. What types of courses are offered by Australian universities?

Australian universities offer 4 different types of courses:

  • Masters by Coursework – advanced course, typically of 1.5-2 years’ duration, with an emphasis on classroom-based teaching

  • Masters by Research – advanced course, typically of 1.5-2 years’ duration, with an emphasis on producing a research-based thesis

  • Graduate Diploma – typically of 1 year’s duration, oriented toward professional upskilling

  • Graduate Certificate– typically of 6 month’s duration, oriented toward professional upskilling

  1. What are the requirements for admission to Australian universities?

Academic: most Australian universities do accept Indian 3-year Bachelor programmes, with a specific minimum score.

Language: the preferred English tests are PTE Academic and IELTS, with a specific minimum score.

  1. When do Australian universities have their intakes?

Australian universities typically have 2 intakes a year.

  • Intake 1 – Between February and March, with certain universities or programmes commencing as late as April.

  • Intake 2 – Between July and August, with certain universities or programmes commencing as late as September.

  1. How much does it cost to study in Australia?

The tuition fee for most Masters programmes ranges between 20-37000 AUD per annum.

Additional fees will include an application fee of about 150-200 AUD, the Student Service and Amenities Fee (SSAF) of about 300-350 AUD, and the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).

The cost of living in Australia varies as per the location, averaging at 20-25000 AUD per annum.

  1. Does Australia have a stay-back option for international students?

International students who graduate with a Bachelors, Masters or Doctoral degree awarded by an Australian University, are eligible for the Post-Study Work Stream Visa.

With this visa, the candidate is allowed to remain in the country to live and work for up to 2-4 years, depending on the qualification level.
